What swab should I use? A quick guide to our Hygiena range

Hygiena Swabs
The swab you need depends on what you’re testing for and how fast you need an answer. Use Ultrasnap for routine ATP cleaning verification on surfaces (20 seconds), SuperSnap where residues are low or surfaces are hard to clean (4x more sensitive) and Aquasnap for ATP in water and CIP rinse samples (15 seconds).
For microbiological confirmation, use MicroSnap E.coli (6 hours), MicroSnap EB for Enterobacteriaceae (6-8 hours), MicroSnap Total for TVC (7 hours) or the Listeria Environmental swab (24-48 hours). For allergens and residue, use AlerTox Sticks for specific allergen proteins and AllerFlow Gluten for gluten (both 10 mins), or PRO-Clean for general protein. ATP verifies cleaning; it doesn’t identify what’s present. All ATP and MicroSnap tests read on an EnsureTouch.
That is where knowing your swabs comes in; each one in Hygiena’s range is built for a specific job, and matching the right swab to the right surface takes the guesswork out of your quality control routine, allowing for no confusion, just a quick, accurate read.
Let’s walk through our portfolio of what each swab does, where it fits, and how to pick the right one for your application.

ATP Monitoring

ATP verification is now a recognised line of defence for food, beverage, healthcare and pharmaceutical sites because it converts invisible organic residues into hard numbers in seconds.

  • Ultrasnap: AOAC Certified, delivers superior accuracy and results in just 20 seconds.
  • AquaSnap: Self-contained ATP water tests that provide rapid, accurate detection of biological contamination in water systems. This swab produces results within 15 seconds.
  • SuperSnap: High-sensitivity ATP swab is 4x more sensitive than standard tests
  • Calcheck: A reusable LED calibration verification device that validates your Hygiena luminometer optical performance in under 60 seconds.

Micro Organism Testing

Allergen Detection

Designed for commercial kitchens and food manufacturers, our Allergen Detection portfolio consists of rapid, user-friendly tests for detecting allergens that require no lab equipment or scientific knowledge.

  • AlexTox® Sticks: This range covers around 13 analytes – almond, walnut, lactoglobulin, casein, crustacean, eggs, fish, hazelnut, mustard, peanut, sesame, soy and milk. These rapid, user-friendly tests detect with no lab equipment or scientific knowledge required.
  • Allerflow Gluten Residue Test: This rapid lateral flow gluten tester detects gluten residue on environmental surfaces and delivers results in just 10 minutes.

Evaluating the presence, activity level, or residual effects of specific biocatalysts to verify processing efficiency, safety, and quality control.

  • Oleotest: This colourimetric assay determines total polar compounds in frying oils in 2 minutes.

Protein Residue

Detect any protein residue left on a surface after cleaning to quickly validate surface hygiene.

  • ProClean: A rapid protein residue test designed for food processing and sanitation professionals who need immediate results.

What do you need to run the ATP tests?

Both the EnSURE Touch and the SystemSURE Plus run the tests and deliver accurate, reliable results. The difference is the interface and what happens to your data afterwards. SystemSURE Plus is a keypad-operated luminometer built around linearity, repeatability and accuracy at the point of test, with results transferred to a computer by wired USB.

The EnSURE Touch is a smartphone-style touchscreen device that syncs to SureTrend over Wi-Fi using SSL encryption and can generate randomised test plans for sites that can’t swab every location daily. If you’re running a single site and need dependable numbers at a lower cost, SystemSURE Plus does the job. However, if you’re trending results across multiple facilities or need audit-ready central reporting, go with EnSURE Touch.

Each swab mentioned above is linked to its product page, where you’ll find full specifications and all the information you need. If you’re building an environmental monitoring programme from scratch, or you’re not sure which combination fits your process, contact our team today, and we’ll talk it through with you.
